One of the joys of teaching at a Christian school is the ability to express our Christian faith (as teachers and as students) in a variety of ways. Earlier this school year my supervisor made a comment about the lack of color on the school walls (looks a bit too institutional), and so immediately I thought of having my biology classes paint a mural on the wall. I gave each class two criteria for the mural; it must contain both a biological theme and a Biblical theme. With these instructions each class voted on a concept and a student artist from each class produced a sketch of their design (see below).

Six days of Creation theme
I submitted both themes to my supervisor expecting him to select one to be painted on the wall. My supervisor was so pleased with the sketches and student ideas that instead of selecting one design only, he wanted both on the wall. This made me extremely happy as I knew both classes (and both artists) were invested in their ideas.
We quickly made plans to sketch and paint the mural (in the end it took over 3 weeks to finish). Here are pictures of the finished murals.

Finished Marine theme

Finished six days of Creation theme
Biological Theme: God’s plants and animals
Biblical Theme: The six days of Creation (of all life forms) as recorded in the book Genesis.
“Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.” Genesis 1:29-30
To God be the Glory!
Great theme!!!! It’s beautiful
Good job!!!
I love this mural! May we use it as the inspiration for an elementary art project at our school?
